It feels good to be back posting in this space again. The end of summer here is always a push. With the arrival of September comes a well deserved deep exhale after the rushed summer months, as is life on a seasonal resort island. We partake fully in the changing of seasons. The fall harvests of winter squashes usher in rich and creamy soup pots and smooth velvety pumpkin pies and yummy pumpkin breads. Cranberry season is just around the corner and Nantucket's own bogs will soon be bursting in seas of red. Sadly, this faraway sandbar is devoid of any orchards, so we forage for feral apples and pears from trees that have been left behind by generations past.
The garden harvests are at their most abundant from mid August to mid September. Hot chili peppers, tomatoes, corn, carrots, beets and beans are still providing for our family and business. Most of the herbs are now cut and drying for storage and bottling. The chamomile field gets hand picked every few days for our superb herbal tea. The weekly market has wound down and we have started taking some time for ourselves lately. We just returned from a week long visit to one of my most favorite places, the mid-coast region of Maine, where we visited with my parents and sister. I'll save those photos for another post though.
Nantucket has it's own country fair, called the Island Fair, which was held a couple weekends ago. We headed out to the Tom Nevers' fairgrounds overlooking the sea with Iley's aunt and cousin, Alana and David. It's a fun event for families and we always end up seeing a lot of friendly islander faces that we haven't seen all summer.
Fare Isle has been expanding our wholesale side of things and I'm happy to announce that you can now find our goods online at Rodale's and locally on island at The Nantucket Looms. Visit the stockist section of our website to see other retailers.
I have some new fall inspired recipes in the works to post here within the coming weeks. Stay tuned for those and some more happenings. I hope your late summer has been a good one thus far and that there are even more good things awaiting you all this fall!
